Sunflower Seeds

These are the most popular seeds in my garden.  There are two ways to buy them - either with their outer husks on when they will appear black, or as sunflower hearts with the husks removed.

I generally use sunflower hearts (see picture) although I have also used black sunflower seeds without a problem..  You will pay about 30% more for the hearts - the advantage of doing so is that there is less mess (the birds don't eat the husks) and hearts will weigh less as they don't have a husk.  Finally birds find hearts easier to eat.

As with any food, the secret is to only put out enough for about 2 or 3 days.  Then what's left, bite the bullet and throw away (with time you'll judge it so you are not wasting much at all) so you can restock with fresh seeds.

These are the two sunflower seed feeders I use.  I prefer the lower one (made by Natures Feast) as it can accommodate lots of birds at once.  But both do a good job.
